Fix Royalties, Save Jobs

Queensland’s royalty settings are threatening coal jobs, suppliers and regional towns. RIN’s plan puts regional communities back in the driver’s seat.

Why it matters

  • 1 in 6 Queensland jobs - 387,000 people - rely on the resources sector.
  • Resources fund 25% of the State Budget.
  • Coal businesses inject $40B into suppliers and local contracts every year.

The crisis we face

  • BMA (BHP Mitsubishi Alliance), Queensland’s largest coal miner: 750 jobs gone; Saraji South in care & maintenance; paid 8× more in royalties than profit; hit with a 67% tax rate.
  • Anglo American: nearly 300 jobs cut across the Bowen Basin and Brisbane.
  • QCoal: shutting 50% of Blackwater sites, impacting 170 jobs.
“We can’t afford to see Central Queensland’s economic engine slow down.” - Justine McLeod, CEO, Central Highlands Regional Resources Use Planning Cooperative
“We’re already seeing a slowdown impacting our members going forward.” - Dean Kirkwood, General Manager, Resource Industry Network
“This is an untenable situation for the future of the Queensland resources sector.” - Kylie Porter, CEO, Greater Whitsunday Alliance
